Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener commonly used as a sugar substitute in various food and beverage products. Chemically, aspartame is a methyl ester of the dipeptide composed of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is about 200 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar), allowing manufacturers to use much smaller quantities to achieve the desired sweetness.
